This photo depicts the exertion required to draw water out of the deep wells that are scattered around the Azawak. (This one is about 120 meters, or almost 400 ft. deep.) Unfortunately, after all that effort, the water brought up is muddy and unclean. These deep wells depend on the rain to provide water, and run dry when the dry season sets in. The hope is that one day this well will be replaced by a borehole system that taps into the aquifers running deep underground. Then, one simply has to turn on a faucet to get clean water.
